G. "Anand" Anandalingamis currently Ralph J. Tyser Professor of Management Science at the University of Maryland. He was the dean of Imperial College Business School at Imperial College London from 2013 to 2017. Previously he was Dean at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. Prior to joining the Smith School, Anandalingam held a variety of positions at the University of Pennsylvania.

Academic career

Anandalingam received his Ph.D. and M.S. from Harvard University, and his B.A. and M.A. from Cambridge University. Before joining the Smith School in 2001, Anandalingam was a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania for nearly 15 years. He was the National Center Professor of Resource and Technology Management and a professor in both the Engineering School and the Wharton School. He served as the chair of the Department of Systems Engineering and directing the Executive Master's Program in Technology Management.

Anandalingam served in key senior leadership positions at the Smith School, including senior associate dean and chair of the Smith School's Decision, Operations and Information Technologies department. He was responsible for helping to develop the school's global executive programs and led the school's effort to revamp and innovate the MBA curriculum. Anandalingam was instrumental in the creation of the Center on Financial Policy (CFP); the Center for Social Value Creation (CSVC); the Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change (CLIC); the Center for Electronic Markets (CEME), now the Center for Digital Thought and Strategy and the Center on Health Information and Decision Systems (CHIDS).

Anandalingam was appointed dean of the University of Maryland's Smith School of Business in 2008 after a nationwide search. The Smith School is consistently ranked as having a top-25 MBA program, a top-20 undergraduate business program, and a top-15 PhD program in the world. The Smith School faculty is ranked in the top-5 in research and intellectual capital.

He has received numerous academic and teaching awards over the course of his career, as well as a variety of scholarships, fellowships, prizes and endowed appointments at Pennsylvania, Harvard and Cambridge. He has published over 100 academic papers many of which are well cited. He has been on the editorial boards of top-tier journals and has graduated more than 20 PhD students, many of who have joined top-30 academic institutions.

Personal life

Anandalingam was educated at Royal College, Colombo, Sri Lanka where he received the Turner Prize for the best all round student as did his brother Arjavalingam three years later. Arjavalingam has a PhD from Berkeley. Anandalingam's father Gnanalingam was Professor of Physics at the US Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. He was considered one of the best scientists from Sri Lanka and was awarded the Vidya Jothi by the President. Gnanalingam was Fellow of IIE and IEEE. Anandalingam is married to Dr. Deepa Ollapally, Associate Director of the Sigur Center for Asian Studies at George Washington University, and is the father of two children.
