The College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (Urdu: ???? ??? ?????? ??????) or CEME is the constituent college of the National University of Sciences and Technology, Pakistan. It is also responsible for academic and military training to the Cadets of Pakistan Army, as well as officers of Pakistan Army. Cadets after graduating from the CEME go to the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul for 1 year special military training or EME Centre, Quetta for 6 months and pass out at the rank of Captain to join the Pakistan Army Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The campus includes all on-campus facilities, hostel accommodation, auditorium, academic blocks, conference halls, spots complex and mess facilities. The library is fully computerized, with a collection of 70,000 volumes.

Sports facilities at EME include three tennis courts, a basketball court, a squash court, badminton court, football grounds, cricket pitches, a swimming pool, Horse Riding Club and two gymnasiums. CEME cricket and squash team won the Inter-NUST title in 2016.

History

On 1 April 1957, College of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (CEME) was established at Quetta as EME School and In 1969, EME School was given the status of college and civilians were admitted, In 1981 a BSc program started at CEME giving it the status of a university and a few years later in April 1984 CEME moved to its current location in Rawalpindi from Quetta.

In 2003, CEME received ISO 9001-2000 certification and a Ph.D program started at CEME in 2006.

Location

The campus is located on Peshawar Road,13 km from the heart of Rawalpindi and 15 km from the center of Islamabad. It spans an area of 124 acres (0.50 km2). The campus consists of training blocks, living accommodation for students, faculty and staff, stadium, auditorium, cafe, mess, gymnasium, mosque, post office, bank, grocery store and a welfare shop.

Admission

Admission to engineering undergraduate courses in NUST is granted through entrance examinations. NUST written/computer based test commonly known as NUST Entry Test (NET) is a MCQ style test. The test is held three times a year. A student can attempt the admission test for all three times, however only the highest score would be counted for admission. Admission to master and PhD programs is based primarily on an interview along with a written test in most cases. The basic requirement for admission in undergraduate program is FSc Pre-Engineering and ICS for getting admission in Engineering, from any Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education or any equivalent qualification (like Overseas High School Certificate, British Advanced Level of Certificate, International Baccalaureate etc.). Minimum 60% marks is required in each Matriculation and FSc/Equivalent Exam. Students can also apply on the basis of their SAT scores, however there are reserved seats for admissions on the basis of SAT scores. NUST has reserved seats in most of the disciplines for students applying from abroad. International students can apply only on the basis of their SAT I and SAT II scores. There is no age limit for admission to NUST. There is also quota for paying cadets (PC) which is reserved for children of retired and serving armed forces personals who later on are bound to join the Pakistan Army for a minimum of 3 years and serve as a Captain.

Financial aid is offered to bright students who are financially handicapped and from underrepresented areas. Financial incentives for the high achievers in undergraduate programs is awarded to about 25% of students on performance and need basis. Students who secure top positions in each discipline in the NUST admission test are not required to pay any tuition fee during first semester on joining in that discipline. Remaining students in discipline are given financial assistance worked out as per their merit for first semester on joining. Apart from that the students who maintains a GPA of 3.5 and above in subsequent semesters get scholarship of Rs 12000 and above. Students directly admitted in PhD program in IT related disciplines are given scholarships from Endowment Fund and Mega Project Fund.

Student achievements

The Devrim II is the first ever hybrid car of Pakistan, designed and fabricated by students of NUST in 2010. In 2012, students (Abdullah Masood, Kamal Rahim, Usman Irfan and Sarim) from the department of Mechanical Engineering recorded a 72 km/l mileage for a road-acceptable mini-car at the Eco-marathon held in Kuala-Lumpur, Malaysia. "Lipton Talent Hunt" contest organized by Unilever in 2013 was won by students of electrical engineering department (Asad Naeem, Mujtaba Hassan Raza, Mohid Nabil and Taimoor Ijaz).

EME Alumni Association

EMEAA - EME Alumni Association was formally initiated in the year 2005 to provide platform to ex-students. Over the years, EMEAA has become an institution of its own, based on strong commitment by the volunteers. Currently more than 2500 alumni members are registered with the association. The association is headed by President and General Secretary, supported by three committees (Scholarship Evaluation, Fund Raising and Alumni Network & Media Committee). EMEAA has a stable financial aid program that aims to support needy students of the college. There are two sessions in a year, the grants are given after a strict evaluation process. EMEAA arranges alumni reunion every year in the college, all the alumni and ex faculty members are invited for the event. EMEAA also holds career counselling and publishes a study guide for students.

SAE EME Chapter

The SAE EME Chapter is a student organisation run by the department of Mechanical Engineering. It has held a number of engineering and technical competitions that include boat-building competition and the popular egg-drop challenge. It holds workshops relating to subjects mainly from field of mechanical engineering.
